Doughnut. Croissant. Fillings.
What if I told you, you could have all these things in one bundle of joy, love and happiness? Well, you could, that and more! Renowned bakery and restaurant, Jason Bakery on the slopes of Lion’s Head in Cape Town offers the best of pastries the city can offer. In fact, it’s so deliciously popular that they close shop everyday at 3.30pm because all their stocks are sold out so fast during the day.
The secret? Butter. Now these guys aren’t part of those sneaky buggers that try to foil the magic of butter with margarine (heathens). Everything from their croissants to the bacon either drips in butter or have that special crispiness only butter affords after baking.
Now they are open during the week Tuesday to Saturday (recently breaking the news on Instagram that “as of 2nd March we are closed on Monday’s until we decide to open on Mondays again”, serving amazing breakfasts and lunches. Can anyone say “lobster roll Friday” as encouragement to break the fast? Go past anytime between 8am to 3.30pm and you’ll be served hearty, tasty, real foodie nosh either through their takeaway window or restaurant (either ways are classy and cool, don’t worry). But be sure not to walk past on Saturday mornings when doughssants are rolled out. Half doughnut, half croissant, these circles of happiness are filled with a unique flavour each week. In true hipster fashion, the flavours are announced over Instagram. think Toblerone, key lime pie, hot fudge, and great god almighty: french toast, bacon, butterscotch, walnut, creme fraiche doughssants. Be sure to be waiting by 10 as these babies sell out like a wildfire on Table Mountain. Fast.
Get your hipster on and treat yourself with something truly amazing. I’m an eager fatty surfing Instagram at 7am Saturday mornings and I’m not even ashamed of it.
Average cost: R60 (Price includes coffee and doughssant)
